Laws for women in India


From school to college or office ending Day back to home women’s safety is the biggest concern in the society existing.The culture, socio- economic status, and family support are some of the important factors. But, the other, often neglected and under-acknowledged, are the laws of the country. Not everyone is aware of the laws made for them and this gives privilege to the culprits in a society to do more crimes.

• If a woman is unable to go to police station for registering a FIR, then she has the right to register it through an email or by posting a letter to the police station.

• A rape victim has the right to take free legal help under Legal Services Authority Act 1987.Legal Authority then arranges a lawyer for the victim

• ZERO FIR : no police officer can deny to register the complaint of the women citing that it is not their area

• A woman can’t be arrested before the sunrise and after the sunset.If there is some serious issue then only with the permission of magistrate and can be arrested in the presence of the women police.

• The Hindu Succession Act : a woman has the right in the ancestral property as her brother.

• A woman has the complete right to get the same salary as her male colleague of equal designation. She also have the right to have all the services that are provided to the male employees by the company.

• Women have the right to give their statement privately in front of district magistrate maintaining her confidentiality.

• Insulting or outraging the modesty of a woman through any kind of sound or act is a criminal offence.

• Any Hindu single female can adopt a son or a daughter.

• Monitoring the use of Internet by a woman is stalking and is a criminal offence.

• In case of domestic violence caused to a women, the person who caused the violence can be stopped from entering where the woman resides.

• Paid maternity leave is now 26 weeks long, following which women can negotiate a work from home arrangement with their employer.

• A woman’s earnings post marriage belong to her, and not her husband or her in-laws.

• Any policy, or property that is in the wife’s name belongs to her, and she has the full right to do with it as she pleases. Also, the husband is not legally responsible for debts in her name.
